Wednesday

I just cooked a roast for dinner. Holy smokes... literally, smoke. I have opened every window in the place. Next time more fan, less oil.

Doors open, sun out, music up LOUD, trying to sing along to German pop, feel like a crazy fool, it is a good day.

Little Things

Running dog-free. Yesterday I decided I wanted to go for a run with just me, myself and I. Usually, my daily runs consist of dog leashes, poop bags, dog treats, random poo and pee stops, pulling, stopping and avoiding people. Yesterday, there was none of that, and it was glorious. I went at my own pace and could focus on something other than dog. I love my boys, but I am going to try to have a "me" run at least once a week from now on.

Establishing new traditions. Every Sunday all four of us walk down to our little bakery and get two chocolate croissants and two Kartoffelbroetchen (potato-bread rolls). We come home, make tea, and enjoy our breakfast. Sometimes we have eggs and sausage with it as well, it is just nice to know that Sundays are our day.

Pick and choose. It is a breath of fresh air to stand in line at the supermarket and not recognize anyone or anything on the covers of all the magazines. It is nice to be able to pick and choose what pop culture I get from home, usually it is just all up in your face all of the time, but here, I actually have to make an effort to find things such as new movie releases and entertainment headlines. I was on Pinterest today and saw something about Oscar dresses, completely missed that this year, and it was kind of nice. Not to mention being able to choose NOT to ever see another Kardashian again is gratifying.

Working technology. I didn't have a dryer for three weeks. It wasn't that bad, the only drawback was that I was only able to do one load a day. It came back earlier this week and it has been lovely getting laundry done. Oh, and having the clothes all fluffy and warm is nice, too (man, do I sound like a housewife or what?)

Here  are some other little things I have been enjoying...

Before and After

Nox here, mom asleep, and since this blog has my name in it I figured I could write at least one post. The other name in the title is my big brother, but his arthritis makes typing hard.

I got my hair cut this weekend. I don't mind how long it gets, but mom and dad seem to think the sweet smell I build up over the months gets too stinky after a while. What do they know.

Anyways, mom and dad are new at this, I guess they wanted to save the stress of finding a German dog groomer and decided to do it themselves. Mom handled the scissors and dad the clippers. It took them all morning, but I didn't mind, both my parents attention was just on me. I got lots of kisses and "good boys" for just sitting there!

They did a good job, at least I don't have to pull out mud clots from my toes anymore, I hate that.  For some reason they ---wait, is that my tennis ball under the couch?  No? OK---For some reason they didn't trim anything on my head, but that's okay, because I am one handsome son of a bitch.

See? That's me. Damn I'm good lookin'

Mom just woke up...must get tennis ball from under couch and take it to her as soon as possible.

Picture Update

Another rainy week behind us, and it looks like there is another one ahead. Bravely taking on the mud, wet and cold. Enjoying hot tea and good books, Sunday breakfasts, and Daffodils. Focusing on the little things, enjoying it all.

New Word: Uesselig (The term German's use to describe the rainy, foggy weather we are having)

Long-winded Random Thoughts

Everyday for the past couple of weeks, I have been practicing my German with a phone app called "Duolingo" . I FINALLY learned how to ask "how are you?" It wasn't introduced in the program right away, which I had expected, and I hadn't heard it spoken at all the past few months. It isn't something that people ask here frequently, unless you're close friends and the person asking expects a long-winded, honest answer. The lack of small talk is so interesting to me, even a simple phrase like "how's it going" took me 4 months to figure out.

In a recent cultural experience, I learned that even when Germans are apologizing to you, it can be scary as hell. This weekend at our local OBI (Germany's equivalent of Home Depot), I stopped to use the restroom inside. After locking the door behind me, the handle started rattling and the door pounding. It was so persistent that my first thought was that it was Zach trying to be  funny. When I opened the door, a woman  immediately launched into a rapid German tirade, complete with a raised voice and flailing hand gestures. I wish I could have seen the look on my face. I was sure she was going to attack me for being in the bathroom when she needed to use it. After she went in, Zach laughed and told me, believe it or not, she was apologizing for trying to break down the door. But  going purely off body language, I was sure she was going to call the police on me.

On the home front, Newton is finally getting better! Last week, we changed his food, and he has had two full days without the cone! I sure hope that this continues, I feel bad now that it took us so long to make such a simple change. Our Vet didn't mention mention that an allergic reaction could be a possibility, but thanks to a family friend who reads this blog, this option was mentioned, and he was right! I can't tell you how big of a relief this is for me, let alone Newton. After 5 weeks in the cone, Newt promptly celebrated by stealing a hat of a toddler at the park. I thought it was a pretty stealthy piece or work, the mom however, did not.

Ahhhh, the freedom of moving my face wherever I want, and stealing clothing from small children!

Becoming slightly plant obsessed, but I am determined to have something to go on our porch when it gets warm enough...

Clean house. Feels so good, for about 5 minutes, until it's covered in dog hair again.

Afternoon light, so glad that the days are getting longer

Evening skies have to be one of my favorites

Getting some rare and much needed dry porch time

Moss, moss, EVERYWHERE

Never thought I would be a morning light in the bedroom kind of gal, but I think I wake up more naturally now, there is something primal about rising with the sun

Spring, is that you?

Afternoon walk around our little Hoffnungsthal

This guy got home before it was dark last week!
